RCA Hockney Gallery / Highgate Cemetery + Thames Rotherhithe / Separating the living and the dead

Styx /
Highgate cemetery + Thames Rotherhithe
Audio, performance, research

Every night at dusk in Highgate cemetery a warden circuits the large cemetery tolling an old school bell, separating the living from the dead for the night. Walking silently next to the warden recording the path of the dead we have a strange connection.

I borrow the bell and ring the tide in, in the Thames at dusk, imagining the river the mythical Styx. If the bell separates the living and dead at the same time every night, does it carry the same charge in a different place.

The recording of the Thames, the waves crashing against the bell, appears eerily to be the ghost of a rowing boat.

Audio recordings of these dusk journeys were exhibited at the RCA Hockney Gallery.
